Coal and Coke Trail

Mt Pleasant to Scottdale  in Westmoreland County

The Coal and Coke trail runs for 5 miles on crushed limestone from Mt Pleasant to Scottdale, sharing its last half-mile with the paved Jacob's Creek Trail. It follows the former route of the Scottsdale Branch of the Pennsylvania RR.

The trail begins just off PA31 in Mt Pleasant. The trail starts in the semi-industrial section of MT Pleasant but quickly enters second growth woods with a small stream on the right. At MP 0.35 a gravel side trail that leads to Willow Park. At MP 1.3 the trail crosses Buckeye Road next to a fine old brick house. Soon railroad tracks parallel the trail on the left and a spoil pile appears on the right. At MP 2.6 the trail climbs away from the railroad tracks to the parking area at the Allegheny Power Substation. The trail follows the driveway out of the parking lot and crosses SR3015 road at MP 2.8. In a tenth of a mile it goes under US119, zigs around a small building and then crosses a creek just before MP 3.0. The trail continues in the woods to MP 3.6, where it joins Milred St at the Robert and Irene Stout Parking Area.
