Mt Pleasant to Scottdale in Westmoreland County
The Coal and Coke trail runs for 5 miles on crushed limestone from Mt Pleasant to Scottdale, sharing its last half-mile with the paved Jacob's Creek Trail. It follows the former route of the Scottsdale Branch of the Pennsylvania RR.
The trail begins just off PA31 in Mt Pleasant. The trail starts in the semi-industrial section of MT Pleasant but quickly enters second growth woods with a small stream on the right. At MP 0.35 a gravel side trail that leads to Willow Park. At MP 1.3 the trail crosses Buckeye Road next to a fine old brick house. Soon railroad tracks parallel the trail on the left and a spoil pile appears on the right. At MP 2.6 the trail climbs away from the railroad tracks to the parking area at the Allegheny Power Substation. The trail follows the driveway out of the parking lot and crosses SR3015 road at MP 2.8. In a tenth of a mile it goes under US119, zigs around a small building and then crosses a creek just before MP 3.0. The trail continues in the woods to MP 3.6, where it joins Milred St at the Robert and Irene Stout Parking Area.
Here the character of the trail changes to residential neighborhood. It shares Milred St, which becomes Bessemer St and then Mt Pleasant Rd, for 0.7 miles. At the crossing of Overholt Dr at mile 3.9, there is an old log house. The trail is again limestone as it parallels Overholt drive for a block, then turns away from the road (MP4.3) behind an auto junk yard. The trail surface changes to asphalt (MP4.4) as it joins the Jacob's Creek Trail. Here the trail is besides Jacob's Creek. A side trail (MP4.6) leads into Kendi Park. At mile 4.9 the trail swings away from Jacob's Creek to follow Stauffer Run. It ends shortly at the Jacob's Creek Parking lot with a picnic pavilion.
Engineering plans have been developed to extend the trail north from Scottdale to Youngwood to connect with the Five Star Trail (page Error! Bookmark not defined.).
There are also thoughts of extending the trail south from Scottdale to Connellsville, to connect with the Great Allegheny Passage (page Error! Bookmark not defined.)
